December 2024 Literacy Curriculum Update

Elementary Literacy Curriculum Update as of 12/10/24

We understand that parents and community members may have questions about the literacy curriculum in our elementary schools, particularly as we work toward improvements over the next year.

The Natick Public Schools elementary literacy curriculum includes multiple components designed to address all aspects of literacy. For reading and writing instruction, we use the Lucy Calkins Units of Study, which has been our primary framework for the past eight years. This framework is delivered through a workshop model, where students engage in whole-class lessons, independent and small group activities, and wrap-up sessions to reinforce learning objectives. Students are regularly assessed to ensure they meet grade-level standards. In addition to the workshop model, we provide targeted phonics instruction using evidence-based programs such as FUNdations, Heggerty, and Orton-Gillingham. These programs help students develop essential foundational skills in phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, which are critical for becoming confident, successful readers.

Recognizing both the strengths and limitations of our current materials, we have launched a curriculum audit to evaluate and refine our literacy programming. This process includes:

  • Reviewing our current resources and instructional practices against the standards set
by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).
  • Ensuring that any new curriculum selected is rated proficient or higher
    on EdReports and Mass CURATE.
  • Engaging a team with representation from all grade levels and roles,
as well as opportunities for input from students and families.

As this work progresses, we will provide regular updates to the School Committee, through our Engage family + community newsletter, and on the Natick Public Schools website. For questions or additional information, please contact Assistant Superintendent, Susan Balboni, at [email protected].

We remain committed to transparency and to selecting a curriculum that meets the highest standards while addressing the diverse needs of our learners.
